Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney: Sculpture
Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney: Sculpture is the catalogue for an exhibition presented at the Norton Museum of Art, West Palm Beach, Florida, January 25–April 29, 2018; and which subsequently traveled to Planting Fields Foundation, Oyster Bay, New York and the Newport Art Museum, Newport, Rhode Island. The show is the first devoted to the artist’s works since the Whitney Museum of American Art’s memorial exhibition in 1943.
Although Whitney is now best known as the founder of that museum, during her lifetime she was better known as a sculptor, receiving major commissions and exhibiting throughout the United States and Europe. This publication highlights the remarkable variety of Whitney’s work—from her earliest classical sculptures to more symbolic public monuments, from bleakly Realist depictions of the tragedy of World War I to late Art Deco work.
