María Berrío - Esperando mientras la noche florece (Waiting for the Night to Bloom)
This catalogue presents the first survey of Colombian-born, Brooklyn-based artist María Berrío and the exhibition of her work at the Norton Museum of Art in the eighth installment of the Recognition of Art by Women (RAW) series. Berrío’s large-scale collages, crafted with layers of transparent paper on canvas, often depict portraits of women, lush landscapes, and domestic interior scenes. Her compositions interrogate aspects of the artist’s own history, the politics of migration, and South American folklore.
Produced in conjunction with the 2021 exhibition of the same name, María Berrío: Esperando mientras la noche florece (Waiting for the Night to Bloom) features an essay from the curator, Cheryl Brutvan, an interview between Berrío and Nigerian-American contemporary artist Toyin Ojih Odutola, and a selection of poetry that has inspired the artist. The catalogue also includes reproductions of all works in the exhibition and the texts are provided in both English and Spanish.
By Cheryl Brutvan, Glenn W. and Cornelia T. Bailey Curator of Contemporary Art, with contributions from María Berrío and Toyin Ojih Odutola, and excerpts from Edna St. Vincent Millay, Federico García Lorca, and Pablo Neruda.
